Tameshigiri: The Art of Test Cutting in Shindō Battojutsu
Introduction
At Shindō Battojutsu Kyōkai, we teach tameshigiri (test cutting) as an essential element of Japanese swordsmanship training. More than just cutting mats, tameshigiri develops precision, timing, and decisive action.
Unlike competition-oriented sword arts that focus on repeated cutting drills for performance and grading, our practice emphasizes Happōgiri — eight-directional cutting directed towards multiple targets — to cultivate realism, awareness, and the mindset of decisive combat.
Because tameshigiri involves the use of live-blade katana, our dojo follows a structured, safety-first progression system. Students begin with simulated training before advancing to live cutting sessions.
What is Tameshigiri?
Tameshigiri (試し斬り) is the practice of test cutting with a katana, historically used to evaluate both the blade and the swordsman’s technique. In modern training, it sharpens precision, body alignment (hasuji), and mental focus while connecting practitioners to the realities of samurai swordsmanship.
Training Pathway for Tameshigiri
Step 1 – Foundational Training (Beginners)
Beginners do not start with live blades. Training begins with:
Wooden swords (bokken) and practice katana
Controlled drills with simulated targets
Correct footwork, posture, and cutting mechanics
This ensures students develop safety awareness and proper form.
Step 2 – Intermediate Preparation
After gaining control and confidence, students progress to structured exercises that prepare them for tatami cutting, refining blade trajectory, grip, and body movement.
Step 3 – Tameshigiri with Live Blades
Once a practitioner demonstrates readiness, they may join our tameshigiri cutting sessions, held three times per year. Under close supervision, students cut rolled tatami mats using Happōgiri arena, testing their technique with realism and intent.
Benefits of Tameshigiri Training
Sharpens accuracy and blade alignment
Reinforces correct body mechanics and timing
Builds confidence and decisiveness under pressure
Connects modern practice with historical samurai tradition
Develops awareness of combat realism, not performance repetition
