Iaido and Battodo – The Union of Form and Function

We teach both Iaido and Battodo, two closely related arts that together form a complete expression of the Japanese sword.

Our curriculum draws kata from each system that complement one another, blending the introspective precision of Iaido with the practical strength of Battodo. Through this balance of form and function, students develop not only skill, but also awareness, confidence, and inner harmony.

Iaido – The Art of Presence and Precision

The value of Iaido training lies in cultivating mindfulness, composure, and refined movement.
Iaido focuses on the art of drawing and sheathing the sword with perfect awareness. Each kata is a meditative study in timing, control, and posture, a reflection of calmness in action.

There is no contest in Iaido; the opponent is one’s own distraction and imperfection.
Through steady practice, students learn to:

  • Maintain focus under stillness

  • Move with clarity and purpose

  • Refine technique into effortless control

Iaido represents, the discipline of awareness, inner balance, and precise form

Battodo – The Art of the Living Blade

The value of Battodo training lies in realising efficiency, control, and applied understanding.
Battodo is the study of practical swordsmanship and the art of the real cut. Students test their technique through tameshigiri (test cutting), applying principles learned in Iaido to confirm their effectiveness with a live blade.

Each cut reveals the truth of one’s form, balance, blade angle, and intent.
Through Battodo, students learn to:

  • Generate clean, efficient cuts with proper mechanics

  • Control power with precision and confidence

  • Understand the connection between movement and result

Battodo represents, the discipline of execution, realism, and functional mastery.

The Way of the Sword – Unity in Practice

At our school, Iaido and Battodo form one complete path.
Iaido cultivates awareness and precision — the stillness of mind.
Battodo applies that discipline through action — the truth of technique.

Together, they unite form and function, calm and power, shaping not only skilled practitioners but balanced individuals who carry focus and respect beyond the dojo.
