Course Overview
This 5-week course is designed for complete beginners, though it is also valuable for martial artists looking to expand their skills. You’ll gain a strong foundation in the essential techniques and principles of Japanese swordsmanship.
What You Will Learn
Throughout the course, students will focus on:
- Stances (Kamae): Learn foundational stances to develop balance, control, and readiness.
- Movement (Tai Sabaki): Practice fluid footwork to improve agility, positioning, and defensive technique.
- Kihon Kata Techniques: Perform basic prearranged sequences to build proper form, precision, and muscle memory.
- Kumitachi (Paired Sword Practice): Kumitachi involves two-person training exercises, where students practice attacks, blocks, and counters with a partner.
These controlled interactions help students develop timing, distance awareness, coordination, and reflexes while safely applying techniques in a realistic context. - Taren (Strength & Conditioning Exercises):
Taren exercises are designed to build grip strength, arm and shoulder muscles, and core stability, which are all essential for effective sword training.
Using a taren-bō or other training tools, students practice movements that simulate the weight, motion, and control of a sword.
These exercises improve posture, control, and endurance, preparing beginners for safe and effective sword practice.
What’s Included
All essential equipment is provided during the course:
- Sabur-ito (used for the Taren-bō section of each class)
- Obi sword belt
- Free Gift: Each attendee will receive their own polypropylene training sword with scabbard to keep.

- Wear suitable loose clothing for safe movement.
